1. Product Identification
Product name: SAE / AISI 1020 Carbon Steel — Round / Square / Flat Bars
Womic Steel product code: (insert your internal code)
Delivery form: Hot-rolled, normalized, annealed, cold-drawn (cold-finished) as specified
Typical applications: shafts, pins, studs, axles (case-hardened), general-purpose machining parts, bushes, fasteners, agricultural machinery components, low-medium strength structural parts.
2. Overview / Application Summary
SAE 1020 is a low-carbon, wrought steel grade widely used where moderate strength, good weldability and good machinability are required. It is often supplied in hot-rolled or cold-finished conditions and is commonly used either in the supplied state or after secondary processing (e.g., case carburizing, heat treatment, machining). Womic Steel supplies 1020 bars with consistent quality control and can provide additional services such as machining, straightening, case hardening and precision grinding.

4.Typical Mechanical Properties
Mechanical properties vary with manufacturing condition (hot-rolled, normalized, annealed, cold-drawn). The ranges below are typical industry values; use MTC for guaranteed contract values.
Hot-rolled / Normalized:
- Tensile strength (UTS): ≈ 350 – 450 MPa
- Yield strength: ≈ 250 – 350 MPa
- Elongation: ≥ 20 – 30%
- Hardness: 120 – 170 HB
Cold-Drawn:
- Tensile strength (UTS): ≈ 420 – 620 MPa
- Yield strength: ≈ 330 – 450 MPa
- Elongation: ≈ 10 – 20%
- Hardness: higher than hot-rolled
5. Physical Properties
Density: ≈ 7.85 g/cm³
Modulus of Elasticity (E): ≈ 210 GPa
Poisson’s ratio: ≈ 0.27 – 0.30
Thermal conductivity and expansion: typical for low-carbon steels (consult engineering tables for design calculations)
6.Heat Treatment & Workability
Annealing: heat above transformation range, slow cool.
Normalizing: refine grain structure, improve toughness.
Quenching & Tempering: limited through-hardening; case hardening recommended.
Carburizing: common for SAE 1020 for hard surface / tough core.
Cold Working: increases strength, reduces ductility.
7. Weldability & Fabrication
Weldability: Good. Typical processes: SMAW, GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG), FCAW. Preheat generally not required for common thicknesses; follow welding procedure specifications (WPS) for critical structures.
Brazing / Soldering: standard practices apply.
Machinability: Good — 1020 machines easily; cold-drawn bars machine differently from annealed bars (tools and parameters adjusted).
Forming / Bending: Good ductility in annealed state; bending radius limits depend on thickness and condition.
8. Standard Forms, Sizes & Tolerances
Womic Steel supplies bars in common commercial sizes. Custom sizes available on request.
Typical supply forms:
Round bars: Ø6 mm to Ø200 mm (diameter ranges depend on mill capability)
Square bars: 6 × 6 mm up to 150 × 150 mm
Flat / rectangular bars: thickness and width to order
Cut-to-length, sawn, or hot-cut ends; centerless ground and turned finished bars available.
Tolerances & surface finish:
Tolerances follow customer spec or applicable standards (ASTM A29/A108 or equivalent for cold-finished shafts). Womic Steel can supply precision ground (h9/h8) or turned to requirement.
9. Inspection & Testing
Womic Steel carries out or can provide the following inspection and test documentation:
Standard tests (included unless otherwise specified):
Chemical analysis (spectrometric / wet chemistry) and MTC showing actual composition.
Tensile test (as per agreed sampling plan) — report values for UTS, YS, Elongation.
Visual inspection and dimensional verification (diameter, straightness, length).
Hardness test (selected samples).
Optional :
Ultrasonic Testing (UT) for internal defects (100% or sampling).
Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) for surface cracks.
Eddy-current test for surface/near-surface defects.
Non-standard sampling frequency and third-party inspection (by Lloyd’s, ABS, DNV, SGS, Bureau Veritas, etc.).
Full MTC and certificate types on request (e.g., ISO 10474 / EN 10204 style certificates where applicable).
10. Surface Protection, Packing & Logistics
Surface protection: light rust-preventive oil coating (standard), plastic end caps for rounds (optional), additional rust-inhibitor packing for long sea voyages.
Packing: bundled with steel straps, wood dunnage for export; wooden crates for precision ground bars if required.
Identification / marking: each bundle / bar marked with heat number, grade, size, Womic Steel name, and PO number as requested.
11. Quality Systems & Certification
Womic Steel operates under a documented quality management system (ISO 9001).
MTC available for each heat/batch.
Third-party inspection and classification-society approvals can be arranged per contract.
12. Typical Uses / Applications
General engineering: shafts, pins, studs and bolts (before heat treatment or surface hardening)
Automotive components for non-critical applications or as core material for carburized parts
