Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – ASTM B705 UNS N06625 Welded Pipe

Q: What is the difference between Inconel 625 (N06625) and Incoloy 825 (N08825)?
A: Inconel 625 has higher nickel (58% min vs 38-46%), higher molybdenum (8-10% vs 2.5-3.5%), and contains niobium (3.15-4.15%). It has significantly higher strength (415 MPa yield vs 240 MPa), higher pitting resistance (PREN 45-50 vs 30-35), and higher temperature capability (980°C vs 550°C). Incoloy 825 is more economical and sufficient for many acid services; Inconel 625 is used for the most extreme conditions (high temperature seawater, sour service with high H₂S, high temperature acids).

Q: Is solution annealing mandatory for Inconel 625 welded pipe?
A: Yes, per ASTM B705. Alloy 625 can form deleterious intermetallic phases (delta, Laves) in the heat-affected zone if cooling is slow. Solution annealing at 1120-1180°C followed by water quench dissolves these phases and restores corrosion resistance and ductility. Womic performs full solution annealing on all Alloy 625 welded pipes.

Q: Can Inconel 625 be used in seawater?
A: Yes, Inconel 625 has excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in seawater, even at elevated temperatures (critical pitting temperature > 100°C). It is often used for seawater lift pumps, firewater systems, and subsea components in deepwater fields. For most seawater applications, super duplex 2205 or 2507 is sufficient; Alloy 625 is reserved for the most aggressive conditions (high temperature, high chlorination, sour service combined with seawater).

Q: Is Inconel 625 suitable for sour service (H₂S)?
A: Yes. Alloy 625 is qualified per NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 for sour service with H₂S partial pressures up to 10 bar (150 psi) and higher, without hardness limits (as long as properly solution annealed). It is often specified for downhole tubing, subsea flowlines, and wellhead components in highly sour fields where duplex and super duplex are insufficient.

Q: What is the maximum service temperature for Inconel 625?
A: Inconel 625 has excellent oxidation resistance up to 980°C (1800°F) in air. For pressure-containing applications, allowable stresses per ASME Section VIII are provided up to 815°C (1500°F). For higher temperatures (above 980°C), other alloys such as Inconel 600, 601, or 617 may be required.

Q: What welding filler metal is recommended for Inconel 625?
A: AWS A5.14 ERNiCrMo-3 (Inconel 625 filler) is the matching filler for welding N06625. For joining Alloy 625 to other alloys (e.g., carbon steel, duplex), ERNiCrMo-3 is also commonly used. Womic uses ERNiCrMo-3 for EFW processes.

Q: What is the typical lead time for UNS N06625 welded pipe?
A: 90-120 days for ERW (small to medium diameters), 120-150 days for EFW/LSAW (large diameters). Lead times are significantly longer than for stainless steels because the alloy strip/plate is produced in small quantities with long mill lead times (often 16-24 weeks). Third-party inspection adds 14-21 days.

Q: How do you prevent iron contamination on Alloy 625 pipes?
A: Womic uses dedicated stainless steel handling tools, rollers, and storage racks for all nickel alloy pipes. Carbon steel tools are prohibited. Pipes are packaged in plastic wrap immediately after pickling. For critical offshore and nuclear applications, we provide certification of contamination control.

Application: Subsea jumper spools and flowline connections in a pre-salt field (Santos Basin). The produced fluid contains H₂S (0.5 bar partial pressure), CO₂, and high-chloride formation water (100,000 ppm Cl⁻) at 80°C. Corrosion resistant alloy (CRA) is required. Alloy 625 was selected for its resistance to pitting, SSC, and HIC in this aggressive environment.

Technical Challenges & Solutions:

1. Extreme sour service (high H₂S + high chlorides + high temperature) – The combination of H₂S (0.5 bar) and 100,000 ppm Cl⁻ at 80°C is beyond the capability of super duplex. Alloy 625 with its high nickel and molybdenum content resists pitting and sulfide stress cracking. Womic performed HIC and SSC testing per NACE TM0284 and TM0177. HIC: CLR 0%, CTR 0%, CSR 0%. SSC (Method A, 720h at 90% SMYS in 0.5 bar H₂S): no cracking.

2. Subsea welding qualification for jumper fabrication – The jumpers require field welds (pipe to flange) using remote welding techniques (hyperbaric). Womic provided 30 weld coupons with recommended WPS using GTAW, ERNiCrMo-3 filler, preheat 10-20°C, interpass ≤ 120°C, heat input ≤ 1.2 kJ/mm. Coupons passed RT, PT, tensile, and Charpy at -46°C (weld 110-160J). Client's welding contractor qualified the procedure.

3. Tight ovality for subsea connectors – Subsea jumpers use mechanical connectors that require ovality ≤ 0.2% of OD. Womic used precision ERW process followed by cold drawing and roller straightening. Final ovality measured: 4″ pipe 0.12-0.18%, 6″ pipe 0.10-0.15%, 2″ pipe 0.08-0.12%. All passed.

4. Corrosion testing at elevated temperature (40°C in FeCl₃) – G48 Method A standard is 22°C; client required 40°C (more severe). Womic performed pitting testing at 40°C for 72h – no pitting on any sample (base metal or weld). The weld metal's pitting resistance was verified to be equivalent to base metal.

5. Traceability from ingot to finished pipe – Subsea applications require full material traceability. Womic assigned unique pipe numbers and tracked each pipe from heat number to final inspection. Documentation package included 1,200 pages of MTCs, NDT reports, and corrosion test results. DNV audited and approved.

6. Logistics to Santos Basin fabrication yard – Pipes shipped from Shanghai to Rio de Janeiro, then to a fabrication yard in Niterói. DNV witnessed loading. All 97 tons delivered in 3 shipments over 5 months. The last shipment was expedited to meet project deadline (air freight for 10 tons of 2″ pipe).

Result: Subsea jumpers installed in Q1 2024. After 12 months of production, no corrosion or cracking has been reported. The operator has standardized on Alloy 625 for all sour service jumpers in pre-salt fields. Womic Steel is now a qualified supplier for this operator's CRA pipe requirements.
