1. Product Definition and Scope

SA213 T2 (UNS K11522) is a seamless ferritic alloy steel tube specified under ASTM A213 / ASME SA213 for use in boilers, superheaters, heat exchangers, and other pressure-containing equipment operating at moderate elevated temperatures. The “T2″ designation indicates a nominal composition of 0.5% chromium and 0.5% molybdenum. T2 is the lowest chromium-molybdenum alloy grade in the SA213 family, offering improved creep strength over carbon steel at a moderate cost, making it suitable for less severe high-temperature service.

Manufacturing Process: T2 tubes are manufactured by the seamless process (hot-finished or cold-finished). They are typically supplied in the annealed or normalized and tempered condition. T2 has lower hardenability than higher chromium grades, making it easier to weld while still providing useful creep resistance.

2. Chemical Composition Requirements

The chemical composition of SA213 T2 is relatively simple compared to higher alloy grades. It contains modest chromium and molybdenum additions to enhance creep strength while maintaining good weldability and formability.

SA213 T2 Chemical Composition (Heat Analysis – Seamless Tube):

Element Composition (%) – Minimum Composition (%) – Maximum
Carbon (C) 0.10 0.20
Manganese (Mn) 0.30 0.61
Phosphorus (P) — 0.025
Sulfur (S) — 0.025
Silicon (Si) 0.10 0.30
Chromium (Cr) 0.50 0.81
Molybdenum (Mo) 0.44 0.65

Composition Notes:

Element Engineering Note
Carbon (0.10-0.20%) Higher than T11/T22; provides strength and hardenability
Chromium (0.50-0.81%) Modest oxidation resistance; minimal compared to higher Cr grades
Molybdenum (0.44-0.65%) Primary contributor to creep strength at elevated temperatures
Manganese and Silicon Deoxidation and solid solution strengthening

T2 is sometimes described as a carbon steel with molybdenum addition. The 0.5% Mo provides significant creep strength improvement over plain carbon steel (SA210 grade A1 or C), while the low chromium content adds minimal cost. It is a logical upgrade when carbon steel reaches its temperature limit (around 400-425°C).

3. Mechanical Properties

The mechanical properties of SA213 T2 are similar to carbon steel at room temperature but maintain strength better at elevated temperatures.

Tensile Requirements (Room Temperature):

Property Minimum Typical Unit
Tensile Strength 415 MPa (60 ksi) 450-550 MPa —
Yield Strength (0.2% offset) 205 MPa (30 ksi) 280-350 MPa —
Elongation in 2 in. or 50 mm 30% 35-40% —

For thin walls, elongation adjustment follows the same formula as other SA213 grades.

Hardness Requirements:

Property Maximum
Brinell Hardness (HBW) 163
Rockwell Hardness (HRB) 85

High-Temperature Tensile Properties (Reference Values):

Temperature (°C) Tensile Strength (MPa) Yield Strength (MPa)
20 450-550 280-350
300 400-480 230-290
400 380-450 210-260
450 350-420 190-240
500 300-380 150-200
510 280-350 140-190

Creep Rupture Strength (Typical Values):

Temperature (°C) 100,000 Hour Stress (MPa)
450 70-85
480 50-65
510 35-45

T2 provides a useful increase in allowable stress over carbon steel at temperatures between 400°C and 510°C. Above 510°C, its creep strength drops rapidly, and higher alloy grades (T11, T22) are recommended.

4. Heat Treatment Requirements

T2 tubes are normally supplied in the annealed or normalized and tempered condition. The required heat treatment depends on the forming method and final properties.

Heat Treatment Requirements:

Condition Process Temperature Range Cooling Method
Annealed Full annealing 870-900°C (1600-1650°F) Furnace cool
Normalized and Tempered Normalizing + Tempering 900-930°C + 650-730°C Air cool + air cool

Manufacturer: Womic Steel performs heat treatment in accordance with ASTM A213 / ASME SA213 requirements. Heat treatment certificates are available upon request.

5. Dimensional Tolerances

Dimensional tolerances for T2 tubes follow ASTM A213 / A1016 and are identical to those described for T11 and T22.

● Cold Drawn OD Tolerances: ±0.10 mm for OD < 25.4 mm, graduated up to ±0.38 mm for OD 76.2-101.6 mm.

● Wall Thickness Tolerances (Cold Drawn): ±10% of nominal thickness.

● Hot Finished Tolerances: Follow the same +40%/-0 to +28%/-0 rules depending on OD and WT.

● Straightness: 0.2% of length (2 mm/m).

● Length Tolerances: Random 5-12 m; specific lengths +50-100 mm / -0.

6. Available Sizes and Specifications

T2 tubes are available in the same size ranges as other SA213 grades.

Typical Size Range:

● Cold Finished: OD 6.35 mm (1/4″) to 101.6 mm (4″)

● Hot Finished: OD 12.7 mm (1/2″) to 219.1 mm (8-5/8″)

● Wall Thickness: 0.5 mm to 15 mm depending on size

Common T2 Tube Sizes (OD x WT in mm):

25.4 x 2.5, 31.8 x 3.0, 38.1 x 3.5, 44.5 x 4.0, 50.8 x 4.0, 50.8 x 5.0, 60.3 x 5.0, 63.5 x 5.0, 76.2 x 6.0, 88.9 x 6.0, 101.6 x 8.0

Manufacturer: Womic Steel maintains stock of common T2 tube sizes for boiler and heat exchanger applications.

7. Inspection and Testing Requirements

Standard SA213 tests apply to T2:

Test Requirement Frequency
Chemical Analysis Required Per heat
Tensile Test Required Per heat
Hardness Test Required Per heat
Flattening Test Required Per lot
Flaring Test Required Per lot
Hydrostatic or NDT 100% Each tube

NDT Methods: Eddy current (ECT) or ultrasonic (UT) as specified. Hydrostatic testing is also accepted.

Hydrostatic Test Pressure: Calculated per P = 2St/D, with S based on material strength, hold time 5 seconds minimum.

8. Applications

SA213 T2 tubes are used in moderate elevated temperature service where carbon steel is inadequate but high-alloy CrMo is over-specified.

Industry Application
Power Generation Lower-temperature superheater sections, economizer tubes, boiler water walls, steam lines up to 450°C
Industrial Boilers Package boiler tubes, waste heat recovery units
Heat Exchangers Shell and tube heat exchangers for medium temperature service (400-500°C)
Refining Non-critical high-temperature piping, heat exchanger bundles
Chemical Processing Moderate temperature process heaters

T2 offers a cost-effective alternative to carbon steel when operating temperatures exceed 400-425°C but do not require the full creep strength of T11. It is often used in economizers and lower-temperature superheater sections of industrial boilers.

9. Comparison with Carbon Steel and T11

Grade Cr (%) Mo (%) Max Temp (°C) Relative Cost Application
Carbon Steel (SA210) 0 0 400 Lowest Water walls, economizers
T2 0.5 0.5 510 Low Moderate-temp superheaters
T11 1.25 0.5 540 Medium Superheaters
T22 2.25 1.0 565 Medium-high Hotter superheaters

T2 fills the gap between carbon steel and T11. While not as strong as T11 at high temperatures, it is less expensive and easier to weld, making it a practical choice for moderate service conditions.

10. Welding Procedure for SA213 T2

T2 has low hardenability and is readily weldable with standard procedures, but preheat and PWHT are still required for thicker sections or code compliance.

Recommended Welding Processes: SMAW, GTAW, GMAW.

Recommended Filler Metals:

Filler Metal AWS Classification
ER80S-B2 AWS A5.28
E7018-1M AWS A5.5 (alternative)

Critical Welding Requirements:

Parameter Requirement
Preheating Temperature 100-150°C (212-302°F) for t > 12 mm; optional for thinner
Maximum Interpass Temperature 250°C (482°F)
Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) Required per ASME code for thickness > 19 mm (3/4 in)
PWHT Temperature 620-680°C (1150-1250°F)
PWHT Hold Time 1 hour per 25 mm thickness

For most tube applications, PWHT may be waived if the wall thickness is below code exemption limits, but many specifications still require it to restore mechanical properties and relieve residual stress.
