1. Womic Steel: Manufacturing Capabilities & Company Strength

Womic Steel Group operates multiple LSAW production lines covering three primary forming methods plus specialized heavy wall capabilities. X60 production requires strict control of microalloying and rolling parameters due to its higher strength.

● JCOE Line: For diameters 406mm – 1,422mm (16″–56″), wall thickness up to 50.8mm. Step-by-step J-C-O forming with mechanical expansion. High efficiency, good roundness. Ideal for most onshore trunk line applications.

● UOE Line: For diameters 508mm – 1,220mm (20″–48″), wall thickness up to 40mm. U-forming then O-forming with hydraulic expansion. Best-in-class dimensional accuracy (±0.2% OD), preferred for deepwater offshore pipelines and sour service. UOE is the preferred process for X60 gas trunk lines.

● Rolled Plate (Single Seam): For diameters 600mm – 1,600mm (24″–63″), wall thickness from 25mm up to 70mm. Single plate rolled into a cylinder with one longitudinal weld. Ideal for heavy wall thickness beyond JCOE/UOE capacity.

● Rolled Plate (Double Seam): For wall thickness > 50.8mm up to 80mm, using two plates welded longitudinally. Commonly used for high-pressure manifold piping and arctic applications.

Total LSAW capacity exceeds 300,000 tons annually, with dedicated X60 production exceeding 80,000 tons per year. Womic Steel holds API 5L Monogram, ISO 9001, CE PED, and is regularly audited by ABS, DNV, TÜV, and BV. Global track record in 80+ countries with over 1,500 km of X60 pipelines supplied.

Production Flexibility:

● JCOE: 406–1,422mm OD × 6.0–50.8mm WT × ≤ 18m

● UOE: 508–1,220mm OD × 6.0–40.0mm WT × ≤ 24m (mechanical expansion improves roundness to ±0.2%)

● Rolled plate (single seam): 600–1,600mm OD × 25–70mm WT × ≤ 12m (weight limit up to 25 tons per joint)

● Rolled plate (double seam): 1,000–2,000mm OD × 25–80mm WT × ≤ 12m

All pipes can be supplied with PWHT (post-weld heat treatment) for thick wall or sour service. Low-temperature impact testing available down to -46°C and -60°C for arctic projects.

2. API 5L X60: Material Composition & Performance Characteristics

API 5L X60 (also designated L415 in ISO 3183) is a high-strength line pipe grade used for long-distance high-pressure gas transmission. Minimum yield strength of 415 MPa (60,200 psi) and tensile strength of 520 MPa (75,400 psi) allow for significant wall thickness reduction compared to lower grades. X60 is produced using controlled rolling and microalloying with Nb, V, and Ti to achieve fine grain structure.

Chemical Composition (Ladle Analysis, max % by mass):

Element API 5L X60 PSL1 (max %) API 5L X60 PSL2 (max %)
C 0.22 (typical 0.10-0.12) 0.12 (typical)
Mn 1.60 1.60
P 0.025 0.025

6. Manufacturing Processes – LSAW (JCOE / UOE / Rolled Plate) for X60 Steel Pipe

Womic Steel selects the appropriate process based on diameter, wall thickness, and mechanical property requirements. X60 requires tighter control of heat input during SAW welding to avoid softening of the heat-affected zone.

JCOE Process (406–1,422mm OD, 6.0–50.8mm WT):

● Plate edge milling (X or J bevel) with precision ±0.5mm

● Pre-bending (crimping) of edges to 1.5x plate thickness radius

● J-shape forming (punch press) – first 1/3 of circumference

● C-shape forming (series of dies) – second 1/3 of circumference

● O-shape forming (final cylinder) – closing the seam

● Tack welding (spot tacks every 300mm along seam)

● Inner SAW (single or multi-wire, heat input controlled to ≤ 3.0 kJ/mm for X60)

● Back-gouging (air carbon arc or grinding) for full penetration

● Outer SAW (multi-pass for thick walls, interpass temperature ≤ 250°C)

● Mechanical expansion (1–1.5% OD increase, improves roundness to ±0.3%)

● Suitable for most onshore trunk line applications

UOE Process (508–1,220mm OD, 6.0–40mm WT):

● U-press forms the plate into a U-shape (2000-4000 tons force)

● O-press closes into a cylindrical shape (3000-6000 tons force)

● Expander (mechanical) to final diameter and roundness (48-72 expanding segments)

● Welding similar to JCOE but with higher throughput

● Preferred for deepwater pipelines and sour service because of superior roundness (±0.2% OD) and low residual stress

● UOE is the preferred process for X60 gas trunk lines due to consistent mechanical properties

Rolled Plate (Single Seam) for Heavy Wall (600–1,600mm OD, 25–70mm WT):

● Single steel plate is rolled into a cylinder using a 4-roll bending machine

● Rolling step by step: pre-roll, rough roll, finish roll (typically 15-20 passes)

● Longitudinal seam welded with SAW (minimum 3 passes: root, fill, cap)

● No mechanical expansion (roundness achieved via rolling accuracy, typical ±0.5%)

● Suitable for thick wall pipes where JCOE/UOE tooling is limited

● Requires PWHT (stress relieving) for wall thickness > 32mm

Rolled Plate (Double Seam) for Very Heavy Wall / Very Large Diameter (1,000–2,000mm OD, 25–80mm WT):

Two plates rolled into half-cylinders and welded along two longitudinal seams

Typically used for high-pressure manifold piping, penstocks, and arctic pipelines

All welds 100% UT and RT inspected

Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT): For wall thickness > 32mm or for sour service (H₂S), Womic provides stress-relieving heat treatment in a car-bottom furnace (up to 12m length) or locally using induction heating. Soaking temperature 580-620°C for 1 hour per 25mm thickness. For X60, careful control is needed to avoid over-tempering. Hardness after PWHT controlled to ≤ 90 HRB (or ≤ 85 HRB for sour service).

Low-Temperature Capability: For arctic projects, Womic supplies X60 with Charpy impact testing at -46°C (min 27J, typical 80-120J) and DWTT with shear area ≥ 85% at -20°C. Controlled rolling of the base plate ensures fine-grained ferrite-pearlite structure.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Why choose X60 over X52 for a gas pipeline?
A: X60 offers 15% higher yield strength (415 MPa vs 360 MPa), allowing for thinner walls (typically 10-15% reduction) for the same pressure rating. This reduces material weight and cost, especially for long-distance pipelines. However, X60 requires stricter welding procedures and is more sensitive to hydrogen cracking. For pressures below 10 MPa, X52 is often more economical. For pressures above 12 MPa, X60 or X65 is recommended.

Q: What is the difference between X60 PSL1 and PSL2?
A: PSL2 has stricter chemical limits (especially lower C, P, S), mandatory Charpy impact testing (27J @ 0°C or lower), maximum hardness 90 HRB, and requires 100% UT of the weld seam (PSL1 only requires spot UT). For gas trunk lines operating in populated areas or low temperatures, PSL2 is often specified.

Q: Can you supply X60 with sour service certification?
A: Yes. We supply X60 PSL2 with HIC testing (NACE TM0284) and SSC testing (NACE TM0177). Typical acceptance: CLR ≤ 5%, CTR ≤ 1.5%, CSR ≤ 0.5% for HIC. PWHT is applied for all sour service X60 regardless of wall thickness to ensure hardness ≤ 85 HRB. We have supplied sour service X60 to Middle East and Southeast Asia projects.

Q: What low-temperature impact testing can you perform for X60 arctic pipelines?
A: We can test down to -60°C. Typical arctic gas pipelines require Charpy impact of 27J minimum at -46°C. Womic typically achieves 80-120J at -46°C. For fracture propagation control, we also perform DWTT at -20°C with minimum 85% shear area. Please specify your required test temperature and energy.

Q: Which process is best for X60 offshore pipelines – JCOE or UOE?
A: UOE is preferred for offshore because it produces better roundness (±0.2% vs ±0.5% for JCOE) and lower residual stress. This is critical for withstanding external hydrostatic pressure (collapse) and for reliable field girth welding on lay vessels. UOE also provides better fatigue performance for dynamic risers. For shallow water (< 100m) onshore near-shore, JCOE is acceptable.

Q: What is the typical lead time for X60 LSAW pipe?
A: Standard lead time for X60 PSL1: 35-50 days. For X60 PSL2 with sour service testing and PWHT: 50-70 days. Rush orders (25-35 days) possible for small quantities (< 1,000 tons) if plate is in stock. For very large orders (> 20,000 tons), lead time may extend to 90 days.

Q: Do you provide third-party inspection for X60 LSAW pipes?
A: Yes. We work with SGS, BV, TÜV, DNV, ABS, and LR. Inspection can be performed at our factory during production, witnessed by client's representative. We issue EN 10204 Type 3.2 certificates upon request.

Application: Cross-border natural gas trunk line transporting gas from offshore fields in the Gulf of Martakan (Myanmar) to an onshore receiving terminal in Thailand, then onward to a gas-fired power plant. The 56 km onshore section crosses mountainous jungle terrain with significant elevation changes (up to 400m), plus six major road crossings and three rail crossings.

Technical Challenges & Solutions:

● Sour service compliance for gas with trace H₂S – The natural gas contains 5-10 ppm H₂S at 55°C operating temperature. Womic performed HIC and SSC testing on 12 production lots. All passed with CLR 0%, CTR 0%, CSR 0% for HIC. SSC testing (NACE TM0177, 720h) showed no surface cracking. We achieved this by maintaining CEV ≤ 0.38%, applying PWHT for all 19.0mm and 22.0mm WT pipes (despite API 5L not requiring PWHT below 25.4mm), and controlling welding heat input to ≤ 2.8 kJ/mm. The client's inspector (BV) witnessed all testing and certified the results.

● Mountainous terrain with high longitudinal bending – The pipeline route includes slopes up to 25 degrees. Field bending of X60 pipes is more challenging than lower grades due to higher strength. Womic supplied pipes with extra-long single joints (18m instead of standard 12m) to reduce the number of field bends by 33%. We also provided a special bevel geometry (compound bevel) that allowed for ±3° misalignment during field welding without compromising weld quality. Ovality was held to ≤ 0.3% (UOE process) to ensure proper alignment on slopes.

● 3LPE coating integrity in jungle environment – High humidity (80-95% year-round) and abrasive laterite soil posed coating risks. Womic applied 3LPE coating with an additional 0.3mm sacrificial layer. We performed 100% holiday detection at 7kV (standard 5kV) and measured peel strength at 25°C and 70°C (230 N/cm at 25°C, 160 N/cm at 70°C). Coating passed cathodic disbondment test (≤ 8mm radius at 65°C, 28 days).

● Cross-border logistics with customs complexity – Pipes were shipped from Shanghai to Yangon port (Myanmar), then trucked 280 km to the pipeline spread near the Thai border. The route passes through two customs checkpoints. Womic prepared country-specific documentation (Certificate of Origin form AK, ASEAN-wide). We also arranged temporary import bonds to avoid duty payment delays. All 18,200 tons cleared customs within 5 days.

● Stringent weld heat input control for X60 – X60's HAZ is sensitive to excessive heat input, which can cause softening and reduce toughness. Womic used a dual-wire SAW system with heat input monitoring on every weld pass. Average heat input for inner weld: 2.2 kJ/mm, outer weld: 2.5 kJ/mm (well below the 3.5 kJ/mm limit). Interpass temperature was kept below 200°C. Cross-weld hardness after PWHT: base metal 78-82 HRB, weld 82-86 HRB, HAZ 80-84 HRB – all within the 90 HRB limit.

● Result: The gas pipeline was commissioned in Q3 2024. All 56 km of X60 PSL2 pipes passed third-party inspection by BV Myanmar. The client reported zero welding defects during field girth welding (over 4,600 girth welds). The pipeline has been operating at 10.5-11.0 MPa for 12 months with no leaks or coating failures. Womic Steel received a "Supplier of the Year" award from the Thai EPC contractor for on-time delivery (all 18,200 tons delivered within 68 days) and quality performance.
