Product Description
Womic Steel supplies ASTM A671 CC60 CL22 electric-fusion-welded (EFW) steel pipe for atmospheric and lower temperature pressure service. CC60 is derived from A516 Gr.60 pressure vessel plate. Class 22 specifies stress-relieved heat treatment, full radiographic examination of the weld seam, and hydrostatic testing. This grade is the entry point of the A671 CC series and is widely specified for low-temperature process piping, LNG utility systems, and cold-region infrastructure where CC65 or CC70 strength is not required.

What ASTM A671 CC60 CL22 Means
ASTM A671 covers electric-fusion-welded steel pipe with filler metal added, fabricated from pressure vessel quality plate, intended for high-pressure service at atmospheric and lower temperatures . The designation breaks into three parts.
Grade CC60 identifies the base plate. CC60 corresponds to ASTM A516 Gr.60 plate, a killed, fine-grain carbon steel used in pressure vessel construction . The chemistry and mechanical properties of the finished pipe follow the base plate specification.
Class 22 defines heat treatment and testing. Class 22 requires stress relieving after welding, radiographic examination of the longitudinal weld seam, and hydrostatic testing . It sits above the as-welded classes (10, 12) and below normalized (32) or quenched-and-tempered (42/52) classes.
EFW indicates the manufacturing method: plate is formed into cylindrical shape, and the longitudinal seam is welded using an electric fusion process with filler metal.
Chemical and Mechanical Properties
Because CC60 is tied to A516 Gr.60 plate, the finished pipe‘s chemistry and strength follow that plate standard.
| Property | Typical Value |
| Carbon (max) | 0.21% |
| Manganese | 0.60–0.90% (typical) |
| Phosphorus (max) | 0.025% |
| Sulfur (max) | 0.025% |
| Silicon | 0.15–0.40% |
| Yield Strength (min) | 220 MPa |
| Tensile Strength | 415–550 MPa |
Actual test results on the mill certificate reflect the specific heat and plate used. Class 22 stress relieving does not alter the base chemistry.
Grade Comparison: CC60 vs CC65 vs CC70
The three grades share the same manufacturing route and Class 22 options; the difference is the base plate strength level.
| Grade | Base Plate | Min Yield | Tensile Range | Typical Use |
| CC60 | A516 Gr.60 | 220 MPa | 415–550 MPa | Lower pressure, moderate temperature |
| CC65 | A516 Gr.65 | 240 MPa | 450–585 MPa | General low-temperature pressure service |
| CC70 | A516 Gr.70 | 260 MPa | 485–620 MPa | Higher pressure, thicker wall |
For a given design pressure and temperature, the allowable stress increases from CC60 to CC70. CC60 is often selected where the design pressure is moderate and the wall thickness savings from CC65 or CC70 do not justify the higher plate cost.
Class 22 vs Other A671 Classes
Womic produces A671 CC60 CL22 pipe using LSAW with either single straight seam or double straight seam configuration.
| Parameter | Range |
| Outside Diameter | 16″ to 100″ (400 mm to 2,540 mm) |
| Wall Thickness | 6 mm to 80 mm (heavier on request) |
| Length | 6 m, 12 m standard; up to 18 m or 24 m on request |
| Manufacturing Method | EFW / LSAW with filler metal |
| Seam Type | Single straight seam or double straight seam |
Single Straight Seam vs Double Straight Seam
Single straight seam is used when one plate can be rolled into a full cylinder. At Womic this covers OD up to about 1,422 mm with wall thickness up to 50.8 mm on the JCOE line. There is one longitudinal weld, so weld inspection coverage is concentrated on a single seam.
Double straight seam is used when the diameter or wall thickness exceeds what a single plate can form. Two plates are rolled into half-cylinders and each is welded longitudinally. This covers OD from about 1,200 mm to 2,540 mm with wall thickness up to 80 mm.
Applications for A671 CC60 CL22 Pipe
LNG and petrochemical process piping at low temperatures where CC60 strength level is sufficient
Power plant piping for cooling water, condensate, and feedwater systems
Compressor station and metering piping in oil and gas gathering
Cold-region infrastructure including water supply and chemical projects in low ambient temperature environments
CC60 is not intended for elevated temperature service where creep becomes a design consideration.
Project Cases
Kazakhstan Cryogenic Tube Project (2024)
A trader based in the UAE ordered ASTM A671 CC60 CL22 LSAW pipe for a cryogenic tube application in Kazakhstan. Specifications were 762 mm OD × 12.7 mm WT × 12 m. The project required -45°C impact testing and post-weld heat treatment. Production and inspection were completed within 10 days to meet an urgent delivery schedule . This case demonstrates that CC60 CL22 with supplementary low-temperature impact testing can be produced and documented within tight timelines.
Germany Low-Temperature Pipeline Project (2017)
A low-temperature pipeline project in Germany specified ASTM A671 Gr.CC60 CL22 LSAW pipe in OD range 406.4 mm to 1,219.2 mm. Total quantity was 922 metric tons . This project confirms the grade‘s acceptance in European low-temperature pipeline applications where Class 22 stress relieving and full RT are required.
UK Oil and Gas Project (2013)
An oil and gas project in the UK used ASTM A671 EFW/LSAW pipe, 24-inch, Schedule 40, with a total quantity of 3,600 metric tons . While the specific grade is not listed in the available summary, this project demonstrates the scale of A671 EFW pipe supply for UK oil and gas applications.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the difference between CC60 and CC65 in ASTM A671?
CC60 uses A516 Gr.60 plate with 220 MPa minimum yield and 415–550 MPa tensile range. CC65 uses A516 Gr.65 plate with 240 MPa minimum yield and 450–585 MPa tensile range. For moderate pressure and temperature applications, CC60 is often sufficient and more economical. CC65 becomes preferable when the design pressure requires higher allowable stress or when the wall thickness optimization justifies the higher plate cost.
Q: Can you supply A671 CC60 with impact testing at -45°C?
Yes. Charpy V-notch impact testing is a supplementary requirement under ASTM A671. The Kazakhstan project referenced above required -45°C impact testing and was supplied successfully . Specify the test temperature, specimen orientation, and acceptance criteria in the purchase order.
Q: Is A671 CC60 suitable for direct LNG service at -162°C?
No. ASTM A671 covers atmospheric and lower temperatures, but direct liquid LNG service at approximately -162°C typically requires materials specifically qualified for cryogenic toughness, such as selected austenitic stainless steels or 9% nickel steel. A671 CC60 may be considered for utility, vapor, or refrigerant systems where the calculated minimum metal temperature remains within the qualified range of the grade and class .
Q: What is the maximum wall thickness for CC60 CL22?
Womic’s LSAW process can produce CC60 CL22 pipe up to 80 mm wall thickness using rolled plate and multi-pass submerged arc welding. Heavy wall thicknesses may require extended lead times and specific welding procedure qualification.
Q: Should I choose single straight seam or double straight seam?
The mill selects the seam configuration based on the ordered size. Single straight seam covers OD up to about 1,422 mm and wall thickness up to 50.8 mm at Womic. Double straight seam covers larger diameters and heavier walls. If your project specification restricts the seam type, state this in the purchase order.
