Manufacturing Process – Seamless Stainless Steel Pipe (Cold Drawn / Hot Finished / Extrusion)

Womic Steel employs three primary seamless manufacturing processes for TP316/316L production.

Cold Drawn (CD) Process – Small to Medium Diameter (21.3–219.1mm OD, 1.0–25mm WT):

Raw Material (Billet) Inspection: Stainless steel billet verified for TP316/316L composition (Cr 16-18%, Ni 10-14%, Mo 2-3%, C ≤ 0.08% for 316, ≤ 0.03% for 316L). Each billet has unique heat number for full traceability.

Billet Preparation: Billets cut to length, center-drilled, heated to 1150-1250°C.

Piercing / Rotary Forging: Heated billet pierced by mandrel to create hollow shell using Mannesmann piercing mill.

Hot Rolling (Pilgrim / Continuous Mill): Hollow shell rolled over mandrel bar to intermediate dimensions.

Pickling (Hot Rolled): Scale removal before cold drawing.

Cold Drawing (Multiple Passes): Pipe drawn through die with floating plug to achieve precise final dimensions. Multiple passes with intermediate annealing for heavy reductions. Cold drawing improves dimensional accuracy (tighter tolerances) and surface finish.

Solution Annealing (Heat Treatment): 1040-1120°C, water quench or forced air. Critical for dissolving molybdenum carbides.

Straightening: Multi-roll straightener ensures straightness ≤ 0.2% of length.

Cutting to Length: Automatic saw cut with precision length control.

Pickling & Passivation: Removal of heat scale and restoration of passive oxide layer.

Non-Destructive Testing: Eddy current test (100%) per ASTM A312; hydrostatic test mandatory for pressure service.

Final Inspection & Marking: Permanent marking per ASTM A312 (grade, size, heat number, manufacturer).

Hot Finished (HF) Process – Medium to Large Diameter (114.3–610mm OD, 4.0–50mm WT):

Billet Heating: 1200-1280°C

Piercing / Cross-Roll Piercing

Continuous Rolling (Mandrel Mill): Hot rolled to final dimensions.

Sizing Mill: Final diameter adjustment.

Solution Annealing: 1040-1120°C, water quench.

Straightening & Cut to Length

Pickling & Passivation

NDT: 100% UT or hydrostatic test.

Primary Applications – ASTM A312 TP316/316L Seamless Stainless Steel Pipe

TP316/316L seamless pipes are the standard choice for chloride-containing environments and high-purity high-pressure systems:

Marine and offshore platforms: Seawater cooling lines, firewater systems, ballast lines, deck drains, platform risers, and hydraulic control lines. Seamless construction eliminates weld seam corrosion in high-velocity seawater.

Chemical and petrochemical plants: Handling chlorinated solvents, hot organic acids, and sulfur compounds. 316L resists corrosion in amine service and sour water. Seamless pipe preferred for high-pressure loops.

Pharmaceutical manufacturing: Purified Water (PW) and Water for Injection (WFI) distribution systems where chlorinated sanitization is used and weld seams are undesirable. Electropolished seamless 316L is standard for USP Class VI compliance.

Desalination plants: Seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) high-pressure piping (70-100 bar), brine piping, and interconnecting lines. 316L with PREN 24-26 is suitable for moderate chloride levels; seamless construction ensures reliability under cyclic pressure.

Pulp and paper bleach plants: Chlorine dioxide, sodium hypochlorite, and other bleaching chemicals. 316L seamless pipe used where 304 is insufficient.

Heat exchangers and condensers: Shell and tube heat exchangers using seawater or brackish cooling water. Seamless tubes per ASTM A213 are standard.

Oil and gas processing (sour service): 316L with controlled hardness can be used for H₂S service (NACE MR0175 limited). Seamless construction eliminates weld-related SCC risks.

Food processing (high chloride): Pickling brine, soy sauce production, and seafood processing where 304 is insufficient. Seamless construction prevents bacteria entrapment.

Textile dyeing equipment: Dyeing machines handling chloride-rich dye baths.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – ASTM A312 TP316/316L Seamless Stainless Steel Pipe

Q: What is the advantage of 316/316L over 304 for marine applications?
A: 316 contains 2-3% molybdenum, which significantly improves pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chloride environments (seawater, deicing salts, coastal atmospheres). PREN for 316 is 24-26 vs 304's 18-19. For marine platforms, coastal structures, and seawater cooling systems, 316 is standard; 304 would pit within months.

Q: Should I use 316 or 316L for welded systems?
A: For welded applications, 316L (≤ 0.03% C) is strongly recommended because it resists intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) after welding without requiring post-weld heat treatment. 316 (≤ 0.08% C) can become sensitized in the HAZ. For seamless pipe that will be welded in the field, always choose 316L unless post-weld heat treatment is possible (rare for field piping).

Q: Can 316L seamless pipe be used for sour service (H₂S)?
A: Yes, 316L is qualified per NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 for sour service, but with limitations: hardness must be ≤ 22 HRC (per NACE), and H₂S partial pressure ≤ 0.3 psi (0.02 bar) for standard conditions. For higher H₂S, consider duplex or super duplex. Womic supplies 316L with controlled hardness (≤ 22 HRC) and HIC/SSC testing.

Q: What is the maximum service temperature for 316/316L?
A: 316/316L has good oxidation resistance up to about 870°C (1600°F). For continuous high-temperature service (e.g., heat exchangers above 550°C), 316H (0.04-0.10% C) provides better creep strength. For temperatures above 800°C, consider 309 or 310. For cryogenic service, 316L is excellent down to -196°C.

Q: What is the difference between cold drawn and hot finished seamless pipe?
A: Cold drawn (CD) pipe is drawn through a die at room temperature after hot rolling, resulting in tighter dimensional tolerances (±0.05mm OD), smoother surface finish (Ra < 1μm possible), and higher strength (work hardening followed by annealing). CD is preferred for instrumentation, hydraulic lines, and pharmaceutical tubing. Hot finished (HF) pipe is used in the as-hot-rolled condition (after annealing) with standard tolerances; it is more economical for larger diameters and heavier walls.

Q: What finishes are available for 316L seamless pipe?
A: Standard: annealed and pickled (2B-like finish). Bright annealed (BA): bright, reflective surface from controlled atmosphere annealing – no pickling required. Polished: 180# to 600# (satin to near-mirror). Mirror: 800# (electro-polished or mechanical). Electropolished: for pharmaceutical WFI/PW systems (Ra ≤ 0.4μm). For marine/offshore, annealed and pickled is typical.

Q: Do you provide third-party inspection for seamless pipes?
A: Yes. SGS, BV, TÜV, DNV, ABS, LR. EN 10204 Type 3.2 certificates available with third-party witness.

Q: What is the typical lead time for 316/316L seamless pipe?
A: Ex-stock (standard schedule sizes): 14-21 days. Cold drawn (small to medium diameters): 21-30 days. Hot finished/extrusion (large diameters): 30-45 days. Electropolish/pharma finish: add 7-10 days. Third-party inspection: add 7-14 days. NACE MR0175 sour service documentation: add 14-21 days.

Q: What documentation is provided for seamless 316L pipes?
A: MTC (EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2), hydrotest report, eddy current/UT reports, PMI report (with Mo verification), flattening/flaring reports, dimensional report, packing list, commercial invoice, COO. For pharma: cleanliness certificate and surface roughness (Ra) report. For sour service: hardness report, HIC/SSC test reports.

Q: Can seamless 316L be used for high-pressure hydraulic lines?
A: Yes. Seamless 316L is commonly used for hydraulic lines in marine and offshore applications due to its corrosion resistance and high strength. Cold drawn seamless offers the tightest tolerances for ferrule fittings. Maximum pressure rating depends on wall thickness; we can supply Schedule 80S and XXS for high-pressure service.

Application: High-pressure interconnecting piping for a seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant. The piping connects the high-pressure pumps (15,000 kPa / 150 bar) to the reverse osmosis membrane vessels and carries brine reject from the membranes. Seawater temperature: 25-35°C (Arabian Gulf), salinity 45,000-50,000 ppm TDS. Design pressure: 12.0 MPa (1,750 psi) with surge allowance. Seamless 316L was selected to eliminate weld seams that could be corrosion initiation sites under high-pressure, high-velocity chloride service.

Engineering Context: The plant produces 200,000 m³/day of potable water for Abu Dhabi's growing population. The high-pressure piping system operates at 12 MPa with frequent start-stop cycles (daily on/off for load following). Previous welded 316L piping in similar plants experienced pitting at weld seams after 5-7 years. The client specified seamless construction to eliminate weld seam corrosion risk and extended design life to 25 years.

Technical Challenges & Solutions:

Pitting resistance in Arabian Gulf seawater at high pressure – High pressure does not directly affect pitting, but high velocity (3-5 m/s) can erode passive film. 316L with Mo 2.2-2.6% provides PREN 25-26. Womic performed G48 pitting test (FeCl₃, 24h at 22°C) – no pitting. Also performed critical pitting temperature (CPT) test per ASTM G48 Method D: CPT measured 35-40°C (operating temperature 35°C, acceptable). Client accepted.

Heavy wall Schedule 160 (2″ and 3″) cold drawn – Schedule 160 for 2″ pipe is 8.74mm WT (OD 60.3mm, ID 42.8mm). Cold drawing such a heavy wall requires multiple passes with intermediate annealing. Womic used 3 cold draw passes with annealing between each. Wall thickness tolerance achieved ±0.2mm (ASTM A999 allows ±12.5% = ±1.09mm for 8.74mm). Dimensional consistency ensured proper fit with high-pressure ferrule fittings.

Thick wall 6″ Schedule 80 hot finished – 6″ Sch 80 has WT 10.97mm. Hot finished process produced consistent wall thickness with no eccentricity. Womic performed 100% ultrasonic testing (UT) on every 6″ pipe to detect any internal discontinuities. No defects found.

Intergranular corrosion resistance for future field welding – Although specified seamless, some field welds (pipe to flanges, pipe to fittings) are unavoidable. Womic supplied 316L with verified carbon 0.015-0.022% (well below 0.03% limit). ASTM A262 Practice E test on simulated HAZ samples showed no intergranular attack. The client's welding contractor qualified orbital GTAW procedure.

Charpy impact at 0°C – Although UAE never reaches 0°C, the client's standard specification required Charpy at 0°C (27J min) for all pressure piping. Womic achieved 80-140J on base metal, 60-110J on weld (for field welding qualification). Passed.

Logistics to Abu Dhabi – Pipes shipped from Shanghai to Khalifa Port in 3 shipments over 10 weeks. BV inspected pipes at port of loading. All 146 tons delivered on schedule. Full EN 10204 Type 3.2 documentation (650 pages) delivered electronically with each shipment.

Result: The SWRO high-pressure piping system was commissioned in Q1 2024. After 12 months of operation at 12 MPa, 35°C seawater, in-line inspection (ILI) showed no pitting, no crevice corrosion, and no leaks. The seamless construction has performed as designed. The client's corrosion engineer noted: "The seamless 316L piping has eliminated weld-related concerns that plagued our previous plants." Womic Steel has been added to the client's approved vendor list for seamless stainless steel piping for future desalination expansions.
