2. EN 10219 S355JRH: Material Composition & Performance Characteristics

EN 10219 S355JRH is the European standard for cold-formed welded structural hollow sections. The "S" denotes structural steel, "355" indicates minimum yield strength of 355 MPa, "JR" indicates impact testing at 20°C (27 Joules minimum), and "H" denotes hollow section. S355JRH is widely used for structural applications requiring good strength, weldability, and low-temperature toughness.

EN 10219 S355JRH offers excellent weldability for field joining, good ductility for forming and bending, and guaranteed impact toughness for structural integrity. Compared to lower grades like S235JRH, S355JRH provides significantly higher load-bearing capacity, allowing for reduced section sizes and lighter structures.

Chemical Composition (Ladle Analysis, % by mass):

Element EN 10219 S355JRH (Max %)
C 0.22
Si 0.55
Mn 1.60
P 0.035
S 0.035
N 0.014
CE (max) 0.45

Note: EN 10219 S355JRH has stringent limits on carbon, phosphorus, and sulfur, resulting in excellent weldability. The carbon equivalent (CEV) limit of 0.45% ensures good field weldability.

Mechanical Properties (Room Temperature):

Property EN 10219 S355JRH
Yield Strength (min) 355 MPa (51,500 psi)
Tensile Strength (min) 470 MPa (68,200 psi)
Elongation (min) 19% (Longitudinal)
Impact Toughness 27 Joules @ 20°C (JR)
Impact Toughness (J2H) 27 Joules @ -20°C (optional)

*Note: EN 10219 S355J2H is available for applications requiring low-temperature impact toughness at -20°C.*

Comparison of EN 10219 Hollow Section Grades:

Grade Yield Strength (MPa) Tensile Strength (MPa) Impact Temperature Typical Application
S235JRH 235 360 20°C Light structural applications
S275JRH 275 410 20°C Medium structural applications
S355JRH 355 470 20°C Heavy structural, piling
S355J2H 355 470 -20°C Low-temperature structural piling

Note: For the most demanding structural and piling applications, S355JRH or S355J2H is the recommended grade.

6. Manufacturing Process - SSAW (Spiral Submerged Arc Welded) Hollow Section

SSAW Manufacturing Process for Hollow Section (219mm – 3,000mm OD):

Raw Material Inspection (Coil): Incoming hot-rolled steel coils are verified for chemical composition, mechanical properties, and surface quality against EN 10219 S355JRH specifications. Each coil is assigned a unique heat number to ensure full material traceability throughout production.

Uncoiling & Leveling: Steel coils are loaded onto the uncoiler and fed through a precision leveling machine to flatten the strip, removing coil set and ensuring uniform flatness for consistent spiral forming.

Edge Milling & Trimming: Both longitudinal edges of the steel strip are milled and trimmed to precise width tolerance (±0.5mm). The edge preparation creates a clean, parallel surface essential for high-quality spiral weld formation.

Spiral Forming: The leveled strip is fed into a spiral forming machine at a controlled helix angle. The strip is continuously formed into a spiral cylindrical shape, with the edges aligned for welding.

Inner Submerged Arc Welding (SAW): The inner spiral seam is welded first using automatic submerged arc welding equipment with appropriate flux and wire combination.

Outer Submerged Arc Welding (SAW): The outer spiral seam is welded immediately after the inner weld, using automatic submerged arc welding equipment.

Cutting to Length: The continuous spiral welded pipe is cut to specified lengths using automatic plasma or oxygen cutting systems.

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT):

100% Ultrasonic Testing (UT): Automatic UT system inspects the entire spiral weld seam and full pipe body for laminations, inclusions, lack of fusion, and other discontinuities.

Radiographic Testing (RT): X-ray or gamma-ray inspection of weld seam (spot or full length as specified).

Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI): Inspection of weld toes and heat-affected zone for surface cracks.

End Finishing: Plain ends (square cut) or beveled ends (30°-35° bevel angle) as per customer specification.

Final Inspection & Marking: Visual inspection for surface defects, dimensional verification, and permanent marking per EN 10219 (including grade, size, heat number, manufacturer identification).

Advantages of SSAW Process for Hollow Sections:

1. Ability to produce very large diameters from standard width coils

2. Continuous production process for high efficiency

3. Cost-effective for large diameter structural applications

4. Good dimensional stability and roundness
