ERW (Electric Resistance Welding) Process – Small to Medium Diameter (6.35–610mm OD):
Raw Material (Strip/Coil) Inspection: Stainless steel strip is verified for chemical composition and mechanical properties per ASTM A312. Each coil has a unique heat number for traceability.
Uncoiling & Leveling: Coil is uncoiled and passed through leveling rollers.
Strip Edge Trimming: Edges are precision trimmed to ensure clean, parallel surfaces for consistent welding.
Forming: Continuous roll forming converts flat strip into a cylindrical shape.
High-Frequency Welding: Edges are heated by high-frequency induction and forged together under pressure – no filler metal is used. Welding speed: 10-60 m/min depending on diameter.
Seam Annealing: Weld seam is induction annealed to restore corrosion resistance.
Sizing & Straightening: Pipe is passed through sizing rollers for dimensional accuracy.

Engineering Context: The plant operates 24/7 with strict corrosion control requirements. The process media contains trace chlorides (less than 50 ppm) and organic acids. 304L was selected over 316L for cost optimization, but the low carbon version (304L) was mandatory to avoid sensitization in welded areas since the piping operates at elevated temperatures (80-95°C). Technical Challenges & Solutions:
Intergranular corrosion risk at elevated operating temperature (95°C) – The 14″ process water circulation line operates continuously at 95°C, which falls into the sensitization range for standard 304 (425-870°C). If standard 304 (0.08% C) were used, chromium carbide precipitation could occur over time, leading to intergranular corrosion and potential cracking. Womic supplied TP304L with verified maximum carbon 0.03%. We performed intergranular corrosion testing per ASTM A262 Practice E on weld samples from each production batch. Results: no intergranular attack observed, confirming full resistance to sensitization. The client's metallurgist reviewed and approved the test results.
Weld oxidation and heat tint removal – The 2″ sanitary lines required electropolished internal finish (Ra ≤ 0.4μm) for pharmaceutical-grade cleanability. Traditional pickling methods for weld seams leave residual heat tint that can harbor bacteria. Womic used a specialized electropolishing process for the entire pipe internal surface after welding and solution annealing. We also performed TIG welding with trailing gas shields (argon backing) on the internal weld to minimize oxidation. PMI verification for 304L (low carbon) against 304 – The mill accidentally produced 3 bundles (approx. 6 tons) of 2″ pipe as TP304 instead of TP304L. These were identified by PMI (carbon content 0.057% vs 304L limit 0.03%).
